Among the ferry terminals along the bank of Yangtze River in Wuhan, the one that attracts me the most is a transfer station called “Moon Bay”. I walk on this huge object floating on the water, this monster of rusty spots, echoing roaring waves with its crashing and smashing sound of joints that reminds me of the sound of the last warship sinking in sci-fi films. Its windows and gates of reticular iron make me feel like having been trapped in a floating prison. As more and more bridges, tunnels and subways have been built, now we have more efficient choices for crossing the river.
Ferry used to be one of the major methods of crossing-river transportation, but now it gets gradually deserted. Many ferries have been transformed into sightseeing ships or stopped for other business. Only four shifts of ferry both in the daytime and at night are still running. Now only fisherman living riverside and migrant workers from various walks of life would choose to cross the river by ferry. Normally most of them would go by motorcycle and battery car. Usually they are covered with dust and they need to carry lots of goods with fishlike smell, so that ferry is still the most suitable choice for them. The rapidly developing urban space has gradually pushed ferry transfer station into a forgotten corner that has silently tolerated many intolerable elsewhere. I step into this space with my handheld DV and record the stories here with the advantage of handheld DV.
